Funkwhale is an ActivityPub audio streaming and sharing server so communities can host and federate music libraries instead of living only inside a Spotify-style catalogue.

Libraries and channels stay on the instance you trust; federation lets listeners follow remote collections without a single catalogue owner. Source is at the Funkwhale GitLab. Self-hosting keeps upload and metadata policy under community control.

Playlists and library follows travel with the account, so a move between instances need not wipe listening habits the way a closed catalogue lock-in does.
